A HUGE CONGRATULATORY SHOUT OUT to Artist Republic's own Brian "Yang-Chi" Rothwell and his Jessica on their new baby boy BISHOP ELISHA ROTHWELL!!

Baby was born on Tuesday, November the 11th, 2010 weighing in at 7 lbs and 6.5 oz, 19.24 inches long... DAYUM! That's tall.

According to PAPA B, Jessica was so strong during the natural birth, and Bishop already has his own Scorpio personality. Funny how they come out all packaged and ready to go! The amazing wonders of life.

I'll leave it up to B to post other details, but for now, proud Aunt Di Di needed to blog about this asap!

It was a great turn out. It was also the 1st and only Friday night event presented by Creative Consciousness NYC. The crowd was electric and really receptive to the art. The playlist consisted of a diversity that represented the range of people who came to support. From Pink Floyd to WuTang Forever, El Michaels Affair to Nina Simone.

Friends from far and wide came to be inspired! There were friends from Pratt and different Brooklyn affiliations, Jersey was in the house, also some of my industry people from Coogi, Crown Holder and even representatives from Australian hip hop magazine Hell Yeah!.

Everyone left inspired to draw or paint even if they had never done so before hand. The VIP room was sponsored by Sour Diesel. Here are a few pieces of the 23 displayed in the show.

Each person had a different favorite piece. ILLBEGOTTEN was less theme driven and more about the asthetic of Brian Rothwell. There were portraits of artist, self portraits, montages of movie scenes and more abstract and conceptual work.

It ended up being the best event to date at Heaven Studios Gallery.

That was why I assumed it got painted over. Some one else came and tried to fix it, but still not translating correctly." Brian Rothwell aka Yang Chi continues "Ibi and me watched what was going on as 2 compitent artist who specialize in portaits. I told him he needed to redo it since it was in his hood. 3 years have gone by and now it was just the right time! He killed it like i knew he was capable of."

A Great Day in BK w/ Jamel Shabazz

It was about 10 years ago when I picked up the book Back In The Days (powerHouse Books, 2001), which I then spent a few hours pouring over right there in Urban Outfitters while standing. I thumbed through each page wondering what it would be like if I happened to be alive in New York City during it's quintessential 80s, when Rap music was in its infancy and its fashion and style were burgeoning with newness and innovation.

Little did I know that 10 years later, my likeness would be captured by the same photographer who captured those iconic moments in time.

Brooklyn born and raised, Jamel Shabazz has provided a window into some of New York City's most influential eras in the past 30 years. His documentation of these times have made legend of his subject matter, immortalizing them for generations to follow. One with the culture of the youth, according to Format Magazine he had this to say in this regards,

“I tell them how beautiful they are, how special they are and how relevant they are to society. I have to do this with them. I use my camera as tool to communicate these issues.”

Having hailed from East Flatbush he maintains a certain partiality to Brooklyn, stating, "there is something about Brooklyn…”

His upcoming book, Seconds of my Life will provide a retrospective of his work, documenting some of New York City's cultural golden years.

In July 2008, I agreed to participate in the A Great Day in Brooklyn photoshoot with Jamel Shabazz, among other iconic Brooklynites of our generation.

If it wasn't for Sallome of DOPE SWAN, I wouldn't have gotten up for the 7:30am call-time in front of Brooklyn Museum on the hottest day of the year. I had to round up the troops Ibi and Yang to come thru for the master himself to capture us while our artistic legacy was still in its infancy, and our styles and abilities as painters experienced a renaissance onto itself...

I'm glad they made it in time.

But what if the problem isn't that we aren't properly throwing things away; what if the idea of "throwing away" is the problem?

You are what you eat--LITERALLY.
Many have heard of the phrase but few understand it's true implications. It means that which you devour becomes not only an integral part of your body but also of your mind and spirit. It's logical, this isn't rocket science or some "conspiracy"; it's basic common knowledge that what you put in your body is essential to your body's chemistry. But how many take into consideration the ramifications poor dieting has on their psyche much less their spirit?

You actually retain and manifest the qualities of what you eat. You not only absorb the meat but it's abused and tragically damaged spirit and consciousness. The person whose diet is largely based on consuming pigs becomes pig-like, eating anything. In turn, a person who hunts their food and eats it wild typically carries a wild nature about them. The life your food experiences prior to your consumption of it and depending on your efforts on how you acquired the food is key in what you will gain from it. Eating meat of animals that have been tortured, abused, confined without proper treatment, boosted full of toxins that cause cancers and genetic defects provided for mass consumption can never provide nourishment to you or your children. The end result is that you become abused, improperly treated, full of cancer within your life.

The FDA. Infamously regarded as one of the most corrupt, genocidal and ruthless organizations that ever existed, doesn't even bother to cover it's sinister agenda through it's blatant assault and disregard for American health.

Monsanto. A biotech company who managed to force-feed consumers genetically engineered fruits & veggies. They rigged research, hid health dangers and pressured government regulators to approve food that even FDA scientists said was unsafe. Like many other biotech companies such as Pfizer and Bayer, Monsanto started out as a biochemical company designing lethal and non-lethal biological chemical weapons of mass destruction for both World Wars. Dioxin, the main ingredient they used in creating Agent Orange, is now labeled as "PCB's" found regularly in GMO foods. PCB's are cancer causing radicals that inhibit cell division, essential for your internal health. Without cell division, cell reproduction becomes stagnant while gaining support from other conflicted cells and becomes tumors. Witness global food terrorism, at it's finest.

The Spook Who Sat By The Door 1973

Sam Greenlee's cult favorite novel of political unrest was brought to the screen in this drama, which also earned a small but loyal following. A congressman hoping to attract African-American voters during an election year decides to make political hay by pointing out that the Central Intelligence Agency has no black agents. Bowing to subsequent public pressure, the CIA admits a number of black applicants to their training program, but they purposefully make the process difficult and unpleasant enough to filter out nearly all the African-American students. Dan Freeman (Lawrence Cook), a strong, intelligent but soft-spoken man, somehow makes it through the gauntlet to become the black CIA agent; however, rather than being given important field assignments, Freeman is put in charge of the agency's copying machines and gives tours of their facilities to give the offices a progressive front for visitors. After a few years, Freeman leaves the agency to move back to his hometown of Chicago and do work with the community...at least that's what he tells his superiors. In fact, Freeman has used his time at the CIA collecting information on how to launch a political revolution, and not long after he arrives in the Windy City, he begins recruiting an army of leftist radicals and black nationalists fed up with the system. With their help, Freeman launches the first stage of an armed revolt with the stated goal of bringing the illuminati power structure to its knees.

ENJOY THE FULL MOVIE

My enterpretation of this movie is not necessarily to arm up and start a guerrilla movement. Thats too literal. I see it as, we have to learn every aspect of this corporate structure calles United States and create our own model to be self sufficient. After the revolt how will the new country be sustained??

For the longest time my comrades Ibrahim and Yang have told me about the Zeitgeist movie and the powerful impact it has or will potentially have on our collective consciousness. I had always wondered about it, and somehow felt it would change the way I thought about things, simply by how they described this film.

One day, my sister had asked if I had ever watched the Zeitgeist movie, and seeing as how often I had heard of it, I knew I finally had to watch it. My sister and I watched it intently, as it opened our eyes and blew our minds to what the truth really looked like. I won't give it away, but it did provide some fascinating accounts about our faith in religion, the government and the status quo in the US. You MUST watch it for yourself, whether or not you believe what they are saying to be true, it's at least healthy to get a dose of both sides of the story. Judging by the evidence presented, I was totally convinced.

My sister, being a very conservative woman who works for the Canadian government, got crazy open on the movie - to the point where she was trying to convince her boyfriend to have a broader scope of consciousness - something she wouldn't ordinarily do hadn't she seen this documentary!

The Artwork of Ibrahim Yaqut Abdel-Baaith

From since I could remember I was surrounded by the arts; live music, poetry, paintings, dancing, architecture, fashion...all of which left a lasting impression on me as a youth. I remember my father, a revolutionary, would be sketching my mother or creating blueprints for construction on our house, taking apart his oboe which he used to play in his acid jazz band in the 70's, or remodeling the bathroom or creating our home made stove. My mother would have sewing materials laid out and about, patterns she was working on and dresses she almost finished on the muslin. I would take their scraps and make stuff out of it, silly accessories or little forts for my g.i. joes; but my main thing was drawing cars. I was about 4 when I made my first complete drawing in kindergarten for homework, and the teacher gave me a failing grade (the upside down smiley face) and wrote a letter to my mother saying she thinks I traced it--luckily my mother saw me draw it and besides she already knew I was especially gifted.

Until my late teens, all I did was draw portraits in pencil. Not being able to afford proper art training as a youth, it wasn't until I arrived at Pratt Institute for illustration did I actually learn to draw with color. And it wasn't until I started taking my artwork seriously did I start to involve content that served my controversial ambitions and alternate views of society.

As I attended Pratt, I also developed a promising career as a model and actor, of which I'm reaping the benefits of now (watch "Model City" on Centric Thursdays at 8pm). When I began doing live paintings, however, I discovered something new about my talents. I worked well inside the spotlight, and my work evolved using speed. I continued painting live at various events throughout 2008 and managed to gather notoriety not only as a painter but as a strong voice within the New York communtiy. It's my dream come true, being able to illustrate my philosophies so that the world can witness my intentions through my fusion of color, fashion, geometry and enlightenment. Stay tuned!

Art and Art History are in my blood. My father worked as a commercial artist, and my earliest memory was walking up to the table where he was painting and knowing instantly that that was what I wanted to do. I studied the greats since I could read - from Picasso, to Dali to Van Gogh and Michaelangelo. My quest for knowledge became insatiable - I would spend hours researching painters who have made their imprint on world history through their creations. I knew I would one day to the same.

I have always been a strong visual artist in school, but I really came into my own when I started painting again in late 2005. Prior to this, I had become a professional dancer and this had taken over my life and thus I no longer focussed on my passion for Art. When I started drawing again, a lot more became clear to me visually and I became a vessel for God's creation. That's probably the best explanation for the works I've created throughout the past 4 and a half years. I can't even really say where my ideas come from, I just know that God, Picasso and Frida are close by whenever I'm painting.

I am recognized for my bold, flat and clean approach to color and line. What sets my work apart is probably my subject matter - I tend to have more feminine themes without being too flowery or light - my subjects remain powerful and grounded. Self-portraiture clearly plays a big role in my work, I put myself in almost everything that I create, much like the work of Frida Kahlo. I often build a relationship with my paintings as if they are my off-spring - they whom I have given life to, who communicate to the world as individuals as well. I just want to continue on this journey of self-discovery, perpetual learning, and of course, imparting my passion and knowledge for Art to the young and young at heart...

Brian Rothwell (born 1979) is 1 of 3 head designers at COOGI menswear. the number one contemporary luxury urban brand. Already noted as a talent in the illustration live painting worlds, Rothwell has turned into a true designer.

Rothwell got exposure for illustrations and graphic art done for independent as well as well know brands. His start in the industry of fashion was with Lot 29, who liscences Warner Brothers characters for clothing. His work was then seen by owners of Akademiks mens wear who took a special liking to his visual language. While freelancing as an illustrator, Rothwell met with the owners of Coogi. After showing the creative director and merchandiser his portfolio, it was instantly seen as compatible. Rothwell’s sense of color, balance and composition were appreciated along with his use of contour. Rothwell was told his work will translate beautifully into apparel with hell from the merchandizer and creative director.

I have always been inspired to be an artist. My oldest art memories are of my uncles drawings. He would sit with me and hold my hand to guide me while drawing circles on paper when i was about 2 yrs old. My Great Grandfather would always give me paper and pencils to explore my imagination. He also used to draw when he was a young man. I grew up in his house the same house my mother and her 2 brothers grew up in Chester Pennsylvania until I was 10. I would always find my uncles old comic books and drawings and it would entertain me for weeks amazed and inspired!

It seemed like everyone could draw and was creative back in school when we were younger. Then every year less people were being artistic. Everyone was losing their creativity as we got older. Some how I have held on to a small amount of that original drive.

My visual language is a mixture of light colorful washes with figures rendered in a naturalistic sensitivity to light and shadow balanced with whimsical shapes built up into form. Influenced by graffitti characters, art nouveua, and 70's art. I enjoy doing figurative work and warping the anatomy to bring out more expression and character. I am more comfortable letting my work speak for its self.

I am an artist because i am able to translate ideas and words into imagery. Imagery and symbolism are the languages of the mind. Painting and drawing to me are about mark making. Expression is found within that mark. People relate to the mood expressed. Art gives a feeling of experience.

For me drawing represents the foundation of creative expression. Drawing also shows a persons comprehension on a certain level. You can tell how much a person knows about something based on the details in their drawing. The more you know about it the better you can describe it visually on a 2 dimensional surface.

"Energy is All Around Us"

There are unseen waves of energy all around us all the time. Where they have come from, and where they are off too, few of us know. How many different waves there are around us, nobody can be certain. Technology, through science has discovered a few of them in recent years, but how many others are out there or in here, is a mystery. They’ve been around as long as the world has been around.

For example, the room you are sitting in now is filled with all kinds of energy waves and currents. Take the TV, and plug it in. Now tune it. What results? A sharp screen. Music. Commercials. Perhaps a soap opera.

Electricity is the driver of the TV set. And just as electricity is invisible, so are the myriad of other frequencies which can be controlled solely by thought. These are the frequencies you should master in order to effect mental influence.

Scientists admit that they know little about energy. They know that it is, of course, but they don’t know what it is. Isn’t it stupendous that in an era where electricity is commanded at will, we still don’t truly know what it is, or why it works? It does work, and that is enough for most of us.

There is also an energy, a life force that flows to the ends of the universe. This energy is endowed with characteristics that make it susceptible to mental control. Called by many names, such as orgone, prana and ki, it is the stuff of life. Existence will be impossible without it. It is an untapped reservoir, inextinguishable and exceedingly potent. This energy is shaped by our thoughts and it in turn shapes our reality.

Actually, this is the basis for all witchcraft (black and white), magic, and mystic ceremonies. Energy (and all other hidden frequencies) is concentrated in a series of rituals intended to condense and distill it with a forcefully created objective and it is subsequently released into the environment to manifest into a reality. Energy is shaped by thought for an outcome. All magic works by this principle. We create realities from our thoughts because our thoughts travel through the hidden energies and these thoughts materialize into tangible form.

Notice how well positive thinking works? Positive thinking harnesses positive energies and effects favorable outcomes most of the time. This is the simplest use of energy. But since it requires little effort, positive thinking is not as concentrated, nor as effective as true psychic or mental control.
